Often considered the birthplace of cannabis tourism, Amsterdam is a global gathering place for both travellers looking to experience cannabis culture, and for new weed-focused businesses (like seedbanks!) to flourish. With policies based on harm reduction and tolerance, the Netherlands has long been a haven for cannabis enthusiasts. You might surprised to learn, though, that cannabis isn’t technically legal in the Netherlands. It was decriminalized in 1976, and now cannabis is sold openly in coffeeshops, the largest concentration of them in Amsterdam, with over 100 in operation there today. It’s one of the few places in the world where visitors can legally buy weed and use it in a public setting. The Netherlands was also the host of the first ever High Times Cannabis Cup, the best-known cannabis competition in the world, in Amsterdam in 1988. Evolving from a small underground gathering to a prestigious award, High Times now holds competitions all year round in different cities throughout the US. Apart from its connections to weed, tourists choose Amsterdam for its rich culture and beauty, like famous art museums, upscale restaurants, and historic downtown. Its safety and beauty make it the perfect intersection between vacation sightseeing and exploring global cannabis culture! Spain Next stop: one of the most weed-friendly countries in the world. Spain isn’t just known for its tapas, beaches, and historic architecture—it’s also a hotspot for cannabis tourism, especially in Barcelona and Madrid. While Uruguay’s legal cannabis market is regulated for citizens, its open attitudes towards weed make it a great environment for exploring their unique cannabis culture.
